Just wanted to say that I love the improvements and updates to the new sampler device! I know that there’s likely not going to be major updates coming for a while after this big update, but when trying out this sampler for activities that use TinkerPlots, there are some features that would be missing for me that I wanted to mention in case there was hope of another future update. Maybe there’s functionality that I’m missing from my exploration though, and I’d be happy to be given suggestions or alternatives!

    • Stacks device – while functionally a mixer can work for this, it is challenging to work with larger categorical data sets in inference without being able to easily input categories and then the number of times they occur. Even setting up attributes for a deck of playing cards is fairly tedious with mixers as-is, unless there’s a feature I’m missing in the sampler.
      • I thought about trying a collector to import an existing data set to set up counts, but it kind of removes agency from the student in setting up their device freely and somewhat restricts them to the data given. Additionally, the collector option is removed when a second device is added, which removes this option for any linked devices.
    • Replacement per device – some activities we work on will have a mix of devices that are set to with and without replacement, notably when simulating data from an observational study comparing two groups under the null hypothesis, but the current setting is a global replacement setting for all devices.
      • Just a cosmetic suggestion, but I really like TP’s visual cue for with/without replacement to change the outline of the device to an open top for without replacement to suggest that items can be removed from the device.

All of that said, this is a huge jump in functionality over the old version, and I want to thank you so much for all the work you’ve done on the CODAP sampler so far! I’ll share more thoughts as I get the chance to play around with it more.

    Hi Kit,

Thanks for the feedback, especially the suggestions, which are both excellent. I confess that in our discussions about functionality, I can’t recall our ever having considered “replacement per device.”

We did realize that the current interface for creating the contents of mixers is limited. I was able to create a deck of cards rather quickly by asking ChatGPT to generate the comma separated list: 1C,2C,3C,4C,5C,6C,7C,8C,9C,10C,JC,QC,KC,1D,2D,3D,4D,5D,6D,7D,8D,9D,10D,JD,QD,KD,1H,2H,3H,4H,5H,6H,7H,8H,9H,10H,JH,QH,KH,1S,2S,3S,4S,5S,6S,7S,8S,9S,10S,JS,QS,KS. And I was gratified to find it works!

We’ll certainly consider adding the functionality you describe in the future if we get some funding for it!

    Bill
